BHU PhD admission process will start soon for the academic session 2026. Students are invited for online registration to the PhD program. Admission for PhD will be through Research Entrance Test-Exempted (RET -Exempted) and RET. which will include scores of NET Examination of UGC/CSIR and ASRB. BHU application fee for General / OBC / EWS is INR 600/- and for SC/ST/PwBD is INR 300/-. Interested students can access the application form online on the admission portal for the PhD program. Banaras hindu University was founded in 1916. It is an autonomous and one of the prestigious central universities in India. BHU is one of the largest residential universities with an area of 550 hectares (1360 acres). It provides teaching in various disciplines across commerce, science, engineering and technology, medical science, social science, education, visual arts, performing arts, journalism, foreign and Indian language, agriculture, Sanskrit Vidya Dharm Vigyan and library science. The university offers PHd in 37 faculties: Department of Physical Education, Faculty of Commerce, Interdisciplinary School of Life Sciences, Department of Molecular And Human Genetics, Department of Economics, Department of English, Department of Mathematics, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Psychology, Department of School of Biotechnology and more.

Ph.D program duration at BHU is for the minimum duration of 1 year and maximum duration of 7 years. For some programs, duration is as per UGC guidelines, and as per Ph.D program guidelines of the university. To get admission to BHU for a PhD program, students need to meet the eligibility criteria of the respective program department. Selection of the students will be based on merit and entrance examination score of Research Entrance Test-Exempted (RET -Exempted) and RET, including performance of individual interview.

BHU PhD Admission Eligibility Criteria 2026

Banana Hindu University offers a total of 37 Ph.D programs in various disciplines. Each faculty of PhD program at Banaras Hindu University has different eligibility criteria. University requires students to have passed their 10+2, bachelor and master degree for admission to most of the PhD programs. Students need to pass with a qualifying score of 55% mark or equivalent grade in relevant subjects.

For selection of PhD in agriculture extension,  students have to qualify entrance examinations conducted by NTA and CRET. Also, Ph.D in library & amp; information science, a master degree in libarry & amp and information science with valid UGC-NET score is required. BHU eligibility criteria for Ph.D in dairy technology and food processing technology will be as per ICAR information bulletin.

The application process includes:

• Step 1: Register on www.bhuonline.in with your email ID and phone number. 
• Step 2: Fill up an identification form with mentioned documents for authentication of applicants identity. 
• Step 3: fill up required details (personal and educational) and select desired discipline after checking eligibility criteria.
• Step 4: scan photographs and signatures and upload them.
• Step 5: preview and click on confirm button.
• Step 6: Proceed for payment of application fee via credit card/ debit card/net banking/etc.
• Step 7: Confirm a payment process and print out confirmation mail. 
• Step 8: After everything is confirmed, take a print of duly filled online application form for future references.

BHU PhD Entrance Examination 

For admission to PhD program, Banaras Hindu University conducted entrance examinations namely Research Entrance Test-Exempted (RET-Exempted) and RET.

• BHU P.hD admission under RET-Exempted mode will be based on merit. Students will be selected from their performance in the interview which is of 100 marks. 
• Ph.D admission under RET mode shall be done on Merit based. It will include two components: 70% weightage on Entrance Examination score of (UGC/CSIR NET Exam/ASRB examination and 30% weightage on interview performance. 

University has its own entrance test portal under the domain www.bhuonline.in. All the information will be available on Information Bulletin 2026 on BHU portal. Students have to register themselves online only.

BHU PhD Reservation 

University provides reservation and relaxation for various SC/ST/PwBD/OBC categories. Such as: there is 15% seat reservation for Scheduled Caste and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe. There is 27% reservation for OBC category, and 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections. University also offers 5% seat reservation to Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD). As for relaxation in eligibility criteria: there is 5% relaxation for OBC category, 5% for SC& ST, and 5% for PwBD.
